Fraser's Hill
Fraser's
Hill situated 1,500 metres above sea-level on the titiwangsa
mountain range of peninsula malaysia. Named after a solitary
english pioneer called james louis fraser in the 1890s, it is built
on 7 hills. The architecture of the older buildings are essentially
georgian as it was meant to be a cool retreat from the humidity of
the lowlands for the earlier british community when malaysia was
still a colony of the british empire.
James Fraser was an accountant by profession who had travelled to
Australia at the peak of the gold rush and then on to Malaya,
hoping to strike gold at what was known as Ulu Tras. He didn't find
much gold but tin deposits was aplenty. Chinese miners was called
upon to extract the tin which was then hauled by mules through
thich jungle along perilous hill route to the nearest town, Raub.
Here, Fraser set up camp and a gambling den for his workers.
But after 25 years fraser mysteriously disappeared and when a
search party trekked upinto the area to look for him in 1917, the
camp and mines were deserted. But the beauty and the coolness of
the area convinced the party that the area has more to offer than
tin deposits. They convinced the british authorities that it would
make an excellent hill station and named it Fraser's Hill, after
the missing englishman. Cool throughout the year at an average of
18 - 20 degree celsius, it is still a favoured destination for
anyone wishing to escape from humidity and the hustle and bustle of
city life. Fraser's Hill is truly an idyllic place for one to rest
and to be away from it all.
Activities
Golfing
Here, golfer will find enough to occupy his days whereas
non-golfers can while away their time Horseback Riding or by simply
strolling down the picturesque lanes that weave through the green
countryside. The fresh mountain air is cool and invigorating and
when dusk falls, the mist that blows in brings back memories of a
simple, gentle era.
Horseback Riding
the paddock at Fraser's Hill provides ponies for novices who would
like to experience the pleasures of riding, and horses are provided
for the more proficient riders. This is an ideal way to explore the
hill and there are a number of trails that spiral around the
hillside. There is nothing like the feeling of the rocking canter
of a horse beneath you as the cool mountain air whispers past your
face.
Bird Watching
fast becoming a center for bird watching enthusiasts, this hill
station is a bird watcher's haven with over 270 species of local
and migratory birds flocking here. The annual international bird
race organized by malaysian nature society in conjunction with the
Fraser's Hill development corporation sees participants from all
over the world converging to determine which team can sight,
identify, and record the most number of birds as stated in the
official checklist. This world renown event seeks to promote
fraser's hill as a bird sanctuary and encourages bird watching as a
healthy outdoor activity.
To keep children occupied there are playgrounds, a mini zoo and a
skating rink. There is also a Sports Complex in the town centre for
those who keen on a game of squash or tennis. A heated swimming
pool, sauna and gym are available too.

Getting There
from Kuala Lumpur by private transport you can
either travel to kuala kubu baharu (kkb) by the non-expressway old
road via rawang and serendah or take the north-south highway,
turning off at rawang and thereby proceed northward via the old
road or turning off at the tanjung malim exit and proceed
southward. From kkb, take the road to kuala lipis/raub - eastward.
travel for about 40km until you reach the gap, which is the control
gate for traffic up the narrow, almost single lane road up to
Fraser's Hill, which is 8km away. Because of the narrow road,
traffic-flow is one-way each time and there is a schedule for going
up or down.

If you are coming from the North, i.e. Penang or Ipoh, you can take
turn-off at Tanjong Malim on the NS Highway and head southward to
KKB.
From Kuala Lumpur by public transport
Take the bus to KKB from Pudu Raya bus station in KL which leaves
hourly. The bus operates twice daily uphill to The Gap at 8am and
12 noon. If you are taking the 8am bus, you'd need to stay
overnight in KKB. Otherwise, take the early bus from KL, at 9am,
for the 60km trip. You'd reach KKB with time to spare before
catching the noon bus. The downhill ride to KKB is at 10.00am and
2.00pm. There are also taxi services should that be your preference
but that would cut the travelling time by only 10 minutes.
