Latihan Gajah Elephant Sanctuary Latihan Gajah Elephant Sanctuary is located at kuala
gadah in the peninsular malaysia state of Pahang. Elephant, earth's
largest living land mammal is cared for and protected here. This
sanctuary is the home for a dozen asian elephants which have been
rescued and relocated from the country. Elephants can pose a threat to crops or be hunted for
their valuable ivory tusks. So, Malaysia has taken the move to
protect these wonderful wild elephants with santuaries. Initially,
relocating the elephants from the wild requires a team of rangers
with the help from local guide. Tracking elephants will take
several days on foot. When the animal is located, it will be
tranquillised for up to three hours. This is to tie them for the
journey back to the santuary.
the sanctuary employee works 24 full-time rangers.
There are split into two shifts, one team works at the sanctuary,
another team is on standby for rescue operations. The rangers in
the sanctuary are updated on new skills and protection programmes
by liasing with other elephant-populated countries such as india,
myanmar and thailand. Rangers are also trained in veterinary
medicine and the senior ranger is a qualified vet. Latihan Gajah
Elephant Sanctuary started operating in 1991. It is mainly funded
by the wildlife department of the malaysian government and in part,
by private businesses such as boh tea, rubber and palm-oil
companies and ngos. The elephants are normally used for
transporting logs, wedding ceremonies and as extras in films.
Recently shot in malaysia movie anna and the king, used the
elephants from this sanctuary. Pahang's royal family also adopts
some of the elephants by sponsoring their unkeep. Visitors to the sanctuary can ride, feed and even
give the elephants a bath in the river. Latihan Gajah Elephant
Santuary is situated in the Krau Wildlife Reserve, which also the
home to wild elephants, tigers and black panthers. Opening hours
