Pulau Ketam (Crab Island)
History
Over twenty years ago, Pulau Ketam was a marsh land that was devoid
of habitation. Some Chinese immigrants landed on the shore and
decided to call it home. The name 'Ketam' literally means crab. It
is derived from the shape of the island that bears the resemblance
of this crustacean if viewed from a certain attitude.
Pulau Ketam is a small island located off the
south-western coast of Malaysia in the Straits of
Malacca.
Getting There
The island is easily accessible from the Port Klang jetty by a
ferry which operates once an hour. The one hour ferry ride is not
exactly an adrenalin-pumping experienc but the 'floating houses'
that came to view when approaching the island is a sight to awe and
city slickers. Perching steadily on long wooden stilts, these
dwellings are suspended about one metre above sea level.
Pulau Ketam is
strategically situated in a stop-over point for fishermen en-route
to the rich fishing grounds beyond. The island is now a prospering
fishing village with a bustling harbour that is frequented by
scores of floating vehicles, ranging from wobbly sampan (small
row-boats) to 'clonking' fishing boats and tongkangs (lighters).
Although the island doesn't offer a vast territory to explore, it
is an Interesting village compact with recreation spots,
captivating scenes, 'bewildering' seafood and the most important, a
community of warm, gentle people.
The Village and The
People
All the houses in the village are interconnected to one another
through a narrow wooden corridor which serves as the island's one
and only 'traffic road'. This island has a number of karaokes,
schools, bank, an opera house, an arcade and many restaurants. This
island is a self-contained community dominated by the Teochew and
Hokkien dialect-speaking Chinese. The islanders are virtually a
'race' that leads a life and a world of their own, uncommitted to
the everyday hassle, pressures and madness of a city.
Famous Cuisine
Seafood is a natural wonder of this island. Pulau Ketam is renowned
for crabs, prawns, fish and shellfish (and even sharks that measure
up to 15 feet). One can have the sea-food grilled, chilifried,
steamed or maybe 'sushi raw'. The freshness and fineness of these
cuisine is remarkable. Pulau Ketam, a place worth a million
to Visit.
