Pasir Salak
Pasir
Salak situated approximately 70 km from ipoh, in central Perak
state. The town consists of mainly ethnic malays, primarily of
acheh, bugis, jawa and rawa descent. Up to this day, Pasir Salak
has managed to maintain much of its traditions and customary
structures. Among are the famed 'rumah kutai', or traditional Perak
malay 'kutai' houses. Rumah kutai can still be seen along the banks
of the Perak river. The design and construction of these houses are
unique and beauty, rarely seen elsewhere. Pasir Salak is also
well-known for its durians and other exotic local
fruits.
The area has
a long history of important and memorable events, particularly of
early malay opposition to the british colonial administration. This
opposite was highlighted in the assasination of the british
resident james w.w. Birch in 1875. At Pasir Salak, the fight
against the colonialists was led by well-known malay warriors datuk
sagor and datuk maharaja lela, symbolic heroes of the early
uprising againts oppression. The killing of mr. Birch led to open
warfare between the malays and the colonial administration. The
bravery of the malays was indicative of the strong 'warriors'
spirit' with which they pitted themselves against the british
army.
The Malays
were finally defeated by the superior weaponry and military
strategies of the British. Datuk Sagor and Datuk Maharaja Lela were
caught and sent to the gallows. They were hanged at Matang and Datu
Sagor was buried at the same place. The whereabouts of the body of
Datuk Maharaja Lela remains a mystery to this day. According to
local, his corpse was cut into three parts by the British who
thought he possessed mystical powers and would otherwise rise after
death.
The incident
was a milestone that marked the beginnings of open anti-colonial
opposition, fanning a burning desire to free the entire country
from the clutches of the British. Independence was finally obtained
in 1957, ushering in the new era of democracy into the
country.
