Pasir Salak

kutaihse Pasir Salak situated approximately 70 km from ipoh, in central Perak state. The town consists of mainly ethnic malays, primarily of acheh, bugis, jawa and rawa descent. Up to this day, Pasir Salak has managed to maintain much of its traditions and customary structures. Among are the famed 'rumah kutai', or traditional Perak malay 'kutai' houses. Rumah kutai can still be seen along the banks of the Perak river. The design and construction of these houses are unique and beauty, rarely seen elsewhere. Pasir Salak is also well-known for its durians and other exotic local fruits.

ifortres The area has a long history of important and memorable events, particularly of early malay opposition to the british colonial administration. This opposite was highlighted in the assasination of the british resident james w.w. Birch in 1875. At Pasir Salak, the fight against the colonialists was led by well-known malay warriors datuk sagor and datuk maharaja lela, symbolic heroes of the early uprising againts oppression. The killing of mr. Birch led to open warfare between the malays and the colonial administration. The bravery of the malays was indicative of the strong 'warriors' spirit' with which they pitted themselves against the british army.

birchct The Malays were finally defeated by the superior weaponry and military strategies of the British. Datuk Sagor and Datuk Maharaja Lela were caught and sent to the gallows. They were hanged at Matang and Datu Sagor was buried at the same place. The whereabouts of the body of Datuk Maharaja Lela remains a mystery to this day. According to local, his corpse was cut into three parts by the British who thought he possessed mystical powers and would otherwise rise after death.

psalak The incident was a milestone that marked the beginnings of open anti-colonial opposition, fanning a burning desire to free the entire country from the clutches of the British. Independence was finally obtained in 1957, ushering in the new era of democracy into the country.
