
The Sound and Light, Malacca
The Sound and Light show in Malacca gives such
historical facts their full emotional and dramatic impact on the
spectator. It modifies one's whole field of vision (of historical
events) by being able to view each object and/or chain of events
separately, in groups or simultaneously as against the normal view.
Dymanic lighting permits the visual interplay between the objects
or events concerned.Sound patterns are added and superimposed, be
it directional, narrow and wide stereo or travelling. Spectators
will thus be surrounded by sound and will be able to visualise the
imagination of the heroes and villains as well as the glory and
tragedy of Malacca history.
Malacca Sultanate
Situated at the roof of St. Paul's Hill. The architectural design
of the palace is based on the escription in the Malay Annals and is
only one in the country. The palace now houses the Malacca Cultural
Museum.
Porta De Santiago
Also called Gateway of St. James, it is last remaining ruin of a
Portuguese fortress, A Famosa built in 1511. It was heavily damaged
during the Dutch invasion. The Dutch repaired it in 1670 and
embossed their V.O.C. Crest above the gateway which can be seen
till today. The timely intervention of Sir Stamford Raffles in 1808
saved the gateway from total destruction.
St. Paul's Church
A modest chapel built at the top Malacca Hill (now St. Paul's Hill)
in 1521 later to become the base for spreading Catholicism in
South-east Asia. Dedicated to 'Nossa Senhora do Oitheiro' (Mary),
the chapel accommodated Father Francis Xavier on his visit in 1545.
Is body was buried here for nine months when he died in 1553. In
1548, the society of Jesuit took over the chapel and enlarged it in
1567 to include gun and cannon embrasures, to be used as fortress
when neccessary.
The Bastion House
This brick building was built in 1910 by the British-owned company,
Dunlop Rubber Company Company. It was solely used as a business
house until 1986 when it was rented out to a bank.The rectangular
building has a steep sloping roof, a feature that indicates the
influence of English architecture.
Dutch Nobility House
Descendants of the Dutch family Westerhout continued to live in
this house until approximately 1930. After the war it became the
Malacca Historical MuseumThis house probably dates from the last
years of the 18th century. The arched gates at the front of the
house suggests that the house originated from a Portuguese
prototype.
Proclamation of Independence Memorial
A wide range of pictures and exhibits are displayed, including
historical documents, maps, treaties, minutes of meetings,
newscripts and others relating to Malaysia's struggle to achieve
independence.
