Tioman Island

LEGEND
LEGEND goes that a beautiful dragon princess was once flying from
china to singapore for her wedding. She settled down to rest over
the warm water of the south china sea. The calm sea and warm water
gave her pleasure and she decided to stay - thus turned herself
into an island, now called tioman island. To this day, tioman
resembles a resting dragon complete with serrated mountains and
permanent clouds.
BACKGROUND
Tioman Island is actually one of the largest in a volcanic island
in a group of sixty four. It is the perfect island in the sun, with
reefs for diving and clear waters for swimming. The soft sands,
swaying palms, wild flowers growing in vivid profusion and cool
waterfalls cascading down green clad slopes makes it the perfect
haven for relaxing. Tioman Island is suitable for those tired of
living in the fast lane and a welcome haven for travel weary back
packers.
GETTING AROUND
There are 4 lovely beaches on the island, each with its own idyllic
charms.
The beach at Lalang , is the most popular among visitors and
... yet enjoy the most refreshingly unspoilt, being devoid of the
usual commercial trappings-no beach vendors, no souvenir stalls and
no beach umbrellas. Here is where the Berjaya Tioman Beach Resort
located.
To really get
away from the city's hustle and bustle, head for the beaches of
Salang or Juara. Salang and Air Batang are the ideal
location for diving and snorkelling-its collection of live corals
and multi-coloured fish is simply stunning.
Juara , situated on the isolated east coast of
Tioman is only accessible from the main village on the island by
walking track. The beach is blissfully deserted-a heaven sent
retreat for those who seek peace and quite.
Activities such as water-skiing, speedboat racing,
spear fishing, collection of corals and other aquatic life are
banned. Nevertheless, snorkelling, scuba diving, swimming and
underwater photography are allowed.
Visit the Malays villages tucked away in the quiet
kampungs where the lifestyle is Traditionally low key. Here, the houses are built on
stillts to keep them cool and dry. A must visit around Kampung
Tekek, and observe how cloth is handprinted prior to being turned
into colourful T-shirts.
Head of the jungle clad hills and scale the
spectacular twin peaks in the south. Then, cool off in the tranquil
surroundings of the waterfall at Mukut Village or frolic in the
silky waters of the isolated beach of Bunut.
Visitors who wish to see the fascinating underwater
life without getting wet, there are round the island trips in glass
bottom.

The restaurants here offer a tempting variety of
international and local fare. Beachfront chalets and restaurants
also serve typical Malaysian cuisine.
The Tioman Gold Club, surrounded by massive granite
boulders, jungle and waterfalls is one of the most picturesque in
Asia. The atmosphere is laid back and leisurely. There is no rush,
no pressure. You can play whenever and for as long as you like. The
18-hole golf-course provides a unique challenge to the avid
golfer.
ACCOMMODATION
there is a variety of ACCOMMODATION to choose from, ranging from
the simple a-frame huts fronting the beaches to chalets, budget
accomodation and international class hotels.

In keeping with the general mood pervading the
