Taiping
Market
The Taiping Market consists of two buildings, the old market block,
which was built in 1884, and the new market block, which was built
one year later. Each one is built with timber post and truss
structures, concrete floor and iron roof about 67 metre long by 18
metre wide. Possibly the largest non-indigenous historic timber
structure in the country, the Taiping Market is also malaysia's
best-preserved example of a major 19th century market building.

Taiping Public
Library
This government building was once the premises of the Chartered
bank of India, Australia and China , later known as the Standard
Chartered Bank, which opened its Taiping agency in 1888. Today, it
houses the public library. The predecessor of this library was "an
excellent Reading and Recreation Room for the Officers of
Government" constructed in 1882. Located at Kota Road,

Taiping War
Cemetery
The Taiping War Cemetery was constructed and is maintained by the
commonwealth war graves commission. It contains 826 graves of
commonwealth casualties who fell before the advance of the japanese
in the 'campaign in malaya' (dec 1941- feb 1942). Until today, its
lawn and surroundings are very well tended. It was constructed and

Taiping Zoo
Taiping Zoo located at the foot of bukit larut (maxwell hill) in
the lake gardens, is set in a landscaped garden with streams, lakes
and abundant flora. More than 1,200 animals from 175 species of
birds, reptiles and mammals are exhibited in natural-looking
enclosures.

Tengku Menteri's
Residence
The British requisitioned the Tengku Menteri's property, and in
exchange, built this house for him in Taiping. It is now the
residence of the territorial chief of Larut, Matang and
Selama.Located at PWD 41, Kota Road, Taiping. |

The Keling
Mosque
The Tamil Muslims came to Larut as dealers in textile, grain and
the Indian 'long-horn' draught cattle. They settled at Kota, at the
southern end of Taiping town. The community built a memorial
dedicated to the wali of Nagore, called the 'Mohammedan Hanafi
Nagore Mosque'. The timber dargah was used as a mosque by the Tamil
Muslim community until the present mosque was built in 1969. |
