Silvercraft
Silver jewellery is usually used by the Malay with the traditional costume for ceremonial occasions and weddings. The silvercraft is a traditional craft cottage industry in Kelantan.
Kelantan silver is renowned for its intricacy on design and superior workmanship.
The silversmith melts the silver and pours the molten metal into a broad and shallow wooden mold. The pieces of silver are hammered according to the required design, and a mixture of resin, wax and powered clay is poured into the mold and left to solidify,
then carving a pattern on the silver's surface with a chisel will begin.
Flower petals, leaves and coiled branches are some of the hallmarks of Malaysian silverware chosen as a motifs in carving the silver. Famous silvercraft products are spoons, folks, jewellery, ornaments, fruit bowls, tea sets, ash trays, brooches and bracelets.
You can visit the silvercraft factory at Kampung Sireh (along Jalan Sultanah Zainab), Kampung Marak or at Kampung Badang on the road to Pantai Cinta Berahi. Open from 8.30 am to 5.00 pm daily except Fridays.
